MANY VOICES, ONE CITY

The Guide to the Community Media of Metropolitan New York

El Diario

  1. Local affiliate or subsidiary of national corporation
Founded in 1913, El Diario/La Prensa is the longest publishing Spanish-language daily newspaper in the United States. Since its inception as a small publication in Lower Manhattan named La Prensa, the newspaper has grown into one of the largest and most influential Latino media outlets in the nation. In 1963, it merged with El Diario de Nueva York, forming El Diario/La Prensa, as it is known nowadays. Keeping up with the new century, the newspaper is now a state-of-the-art multimedia operation that includes print, digital, and other platforms. The paper’s audience has evolved with the times, serving a New York Latino population that has seen distinct waves of Puerto Rican, Dominican, South American and Mexican immigrants. Distribution is about 15,000 daily copies, 7 days a week. The website, eldiariony.com, has 3.5 million monthly unique visitors.
